Mid/Late Summer 2010

Cloudy Appledore Sprints prove good evening for Clovelly

Competing in four sprints along Appledore Quay, Clovelly joined a good turn-out of gigs one a cold, windy Thursday evening.

Clovelly raced in the Ladies A and B, Mens B and Mixed. With a crew of 50% women, the Men's B team was particularly pleased to place above several other all-male crews!

Clovelly annual 'boat lifting' Regatta runs like clockwork

Once again, the Clovelly Regatta was another resounding success and thouroughly enjoyable event. Even the evening before only smiles could be seen, when in addition to the conventional preparations, the Clovelly Crew carried over 10 competing gigs through Clovelly's Red Lion archway to the harbour ready for the following day.

The sun also made an appearance on the day, but conditions remained challenging due to reasonably strong winds and choppy seas - making the final leg of the course (against the tide) feel particularly long!

May heat wave at Rock Regatta

With an impressive team turnout, Rock Regatta proved to be a scorcher of day in every sense.

Four races were entered in all: Ladies and Mens B, Veterans and Mixed. As usual, the magnanimous Clovelly Gig Club held back in order to not make other clubs feel inadequate.

That said, ladies B performed a very respectable row with three novice rowers. Best result of the day was in the Novelty mixed race in which clovelly gained 7th place out of twenty crews (despite a particularly amusing if slightly unglamourous exit from the boat in the final stages of the race - Dominique - how's the head??).

Special mention goes to the ceremonious eating of warm (slightly melted) cake, strawberries and champagne in honour of our departing Chairman Chris Everard - who will be very sadly missed by all.

The Lundy Island Row July 10th

West Country pilot gigs were designed to carry pilots out to ships. The first one alongside won the pilotage job, so speed was critical. The row from Clovelly to Lundy and back is a true test of endurance over 32 miles of sea - it can take up to four hours, depending upon the weather and tides. So come along and support the brave crews!
